WHAT IS OZONE?

A

Ozone (O3) is a form of oxygen found naturally in the earth’s atmosphere. Ozone can be formed naturally during a lightning storm; lightning passes through the air and creates ozone from oxygen.

HOW DO WE MAKE OZONE?

A

The most common method of producing ozone for laundry applications is through corona discharge, which is a type of electrical discharge. Dry air is passed through an electrical field which breaks down the oxygen molecules, at which time the oxygen atoms recombine to form ozone.

WHY IS OZONE USEFUL FOR WASHING AND CLEANING PURPOSES?

A

Ozone is the most powerful oxidant for disinfecting water and sanitizing surfaces.

HOW DOES OZONE WORK IN A LAUNDRY?

A

Ozone cleans fabrics by chemically reacting with soils and dissolving them on contact. This causes the soils to break down into smaller molecules, which then become soluble and are released from the linen by ordinary agitation. This entire process is most effective in cold water.

HAS OZONE BEEN APPROVED FOR USE?

A

Ozone has been used commercially in bottling plants since the 1970’s. In 2001, both the FDA and USDA approved the use of ozone as an antimicrobial agent for direct contact with foods.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF OZONE IN LAUNDRY OPERATIONS?

A

A1: Reduces energy costs – Ozone technology is most effective in cold water, thus dramatically reducing hot water consumption as compared to traditional non-ozone laundry operations.

A2: Reduces water and sewer costs - Ozone’s oxidizing properties allow traditional laundry chemicals to work more effectively, therefore decreasing the amount of chemical detergents needed, which results in fewer rinse cycles and a reduction in water consumption and sewer discharge.

A3: Increases life of linens – Using ozone shortens washing and drying cycle times. This means reduced exposure to damaging chemical detergents and hot water (heat). Plus, ozone adds natural water-softening properties.

A4: Reduces chemical and detergent costs – Ozone is a naturally powerful disinfectant so you can reduce usage of chemicals and detergents.

A5: Deodorizes fabrics – Ozone’s oxidizing properties break down molecular bonds of most organic and inorganic compounds that cause odors, leaving your fabrics smelling clean and fresh.

IS THE OPOL PROGRAM EXPENSIVE TO INCORPORATE INTO AN EXISTING COMMERCIAL FACILITY?

It can be very affordable because the ozone technology can be added to your existing laundry operation. You only need to purchase the ozone generating equipment and ozone delivery system.

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI) FOR AN OZONE LAUNDRY SYSTEM?

A

Depending on your operation, based on utility savings, chemicals and linens savings, you may be able to achieve a ROI in 9 to 18 months.

HOW CAN POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OZONE LAUNDRY AND WHETHER OR NOT THE OPOL PROGRAM IS RIGHT FOR THEIR LAUNDRY OPERATION?

WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE OPOL PROGRAM?

A

A1: Customers must have an active, valid and non-delinquent account with SoCalGas®.

A2: Customers must not have received a rebate on the same equipment from SoCalGas in the past five years.

A3: Ozone laundry equipment must be installed at a facility served by SoCalGas and is subject to an inspection by SoCalGas.

HOW DOES A CUSTOMER ENROLL IN THE OPOL PROGRAM?

A

First, the customer or the customer’s account executive should contact Blackstone. Then Blackstone will schedule an on-site visit to perform an initial energy assessment of the customer’s existing on-premise laundry operation and go over the details of the OPOL Program. If the customer is interested in participating, the customer will be assisted in completing all necessary enrollment forms and documents, including SoCalGas on-bill financing.

WHAT TYPE OF OZONE EQUIPMENT WILL BE INSTALLED?

A

A custom ozone laundry system which is determined to be the most suitable for each customer’s laundry operation requirements will be designed based each customer’s current system needs. The entire installation process will be supervised to ensure that all wash cycle program settings and installed equipment are working properly.

WHAT KIND OF POST-INSTALLATION CARE WILL CUSTOMERS RECEIVE?

A

The program provides two years of maintenance service at no cost to the customer. The service program includes regularly scheduled site visits to ensure the ozone laundry system is operating properly. In addition, all OPOL Program customers will receive comprehensive training on their new ozone laundry system.

WHAT IS THE REBATE BEING OFFERED THROUGH THE OPOL PROGRAM?

A

If eligible, contractor will provide a rebate of $39 per pound of laundry capacity to customers who agree to purchase and use the ozone laundry technology. In addition, the customer is eligible for an additional Final Persistence Incentive Payment of $10 per pound of laundry capacity at the completion of the nocost two-year maintenance service.
